About Dubai

A Short History of Dubai

Dubai (in Arabic: دبيّ‎, Dubayy) is one of the seven emirates and the most populated city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai began life as a small fishing village. It expanded in the early 19th century when large numbers of the Bani Yas tribe settled there. The international trade which flowed from Dubai’s cosmopolitan contracts was the basis of rapidly increasing prosperity. An unprecedented level of building and investment has taken place in the last decade turning Dubai into a major tourist and economic centre.

The current ruler of Dubai, and Vice President of the UAE, is His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In the tradition established by his forefather, he continues to develop his vision for Dubai, overseeing the delivery of his strategic plan for the Emirate.

Dubai offers facilities of the highest international standards combined with the charm and adventure of Arabia – an exceptional blend of modern city and timeless desert.

The story of Dubai reads like a rags-to-riches tale, and indeed, it is hard to imagine anywhere else in the world a city that has developed at such a pace, in such a short time, for so many different people.
